Redberry Lake

Redberry Lake is a massive recreational lake located 83km northwest of Saskatoon and 131km southwest of Prince Albert. Access to the Regional Park is from grid roads off Highway 40.

The lake is a kettle, saline lake, and is named after the buffaloberry. Redberry Lake is a very important location for birds and is protected as part of the Redberry Lake (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve. The lake is also part of an Important Bird Area (IBA) of Canada, and the northernmost island on the lake is a provincial Wildlife Refuge.

On the northwest corner of the lake, there is a regional park with a boat launch, beach, hiking trails, cabins, campground, and a 9-hole golf course.

The Saskatoon Sailing club has facilities on the east side of the lake and run events all summer.

Redberry Lake has been shrinking for decades and the salinity has been increasing accordingly. Starting in the 1940's when the lake was less salty it was stocked with Whitefish and occasionally even Walleye. In 1946 a commercial Whitefish fishery was established. By the 1980's the fishery and the stocking attempts were ended due to increased salinity.

There are no longer any game fish in the lake, but there is a stocked trout pond in the Regional Park.

Stopped in and visited the regional park and had a picnic. It's a lot bigger than I remember. Tons of campsites, lots of facilities, a really nice beach, a trout pond with an accessible dock, and a lot of hiking trails.
