2025 Saskatchewan Fish Stocking Report

View 2025 Stocking Map

The stocking report for 2025 is now available. It was an unusual year for the program, with the fires in the province preventing stocking of many regularly stocked lakes. Several regularly stocked provincial parks weren't stocked at all, and a number of lakes received a much larger number of fish than they normally get.

This year was also the second time in a couple years where smallmouth bass were stocked in the province after many years of not being stocked. The Lake Diefenbaker Tailwaters also received brook trout for the first time ever.

Some other positive news is that the Nisbet Trout Pond has once again been stocked this year. This is despite the notices that were posted at the pond several years ago that it will be decommissioned and no longer stocked.

A few other trout lakes/ponds that were usually stocked were also skipped this year.

Impact of the wildfires on fish stocking

The lakes and creeks in Narrow Hills Provincial Park and Clarence - Steepbank Lakes Provincial Park were not stocked at all this year. Mekewap Lake in Lac La Ronge Provincial Park was stocked by snowmobile during the winter. No other lakes in the park were stocked though. Several lakes in the Creighton area that were supposed to be stocked were missed as well.

North of la Loche

A few lakes north of la Loche were also skipped this year:

Other southern lakes

There were two trout ponds further south that weren't stocked this year as well. These ones were a bit of a surprise.

This was the first year Buffalo Pound Trout Pond was not stocked since 2009. I haven't heard many positive fishing reports from that pond recently, hopefully they will be back stocking it soon.

Pear Lake near the Christopher Lake turn off was also missed this year, the first time in almost 40 years. It's been stocked yearly since 1986.

Where did the extra trout go?

The trout that didn't make it into lakes due to the fires found their way into a number of different waters. Of course I don't know for sure if all these increases were caused by the fires or if were part of the original plan, but these are some of the changes that jumped out to me.

Nesland Lake got significantly more trout than it has in the past, it wasn't even stocked at all last year. Northern pike and perch have gotten into the lake and they were trying to kill them off, I've heard rumours that the increased stocking might also be part of the same effort to winter kill the lake.

The Lake Diefenbaker Tailwaters also received a larger number of trout than in past years, including brook trout for the first time this year.

A number of creeks also were stocked with trout for the first time in a few years.

New Stocked Lakes

D'Amour Lake was stocked with 100,000 Walleye Fry for the second time in recent years. The Melville Town Reservoir was stocked with Walleye for the first time since 2016 and Vivian Lake was stocked with trout for the first time since 2019. This time with tiger trout!

Unusual stocking

This year saw the second time in recent years that smallmouth bass were stocked in the province. 52 were released in Lovering Lakes on October 2nd, 2025. The Lake Diefenbaker Tailwaters saw brook trout for the first time. Vivian Lake in Meadow Lake Provincial park was stocked with Tiger Trout for the first time this year.

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass have been stocked in Saskatchewan several times over the years, going all the way back to the 1920's. The last attempt was in the 1990's but only Konotu Lake was able to maintain a population of bass.

Most recently in 2023 and now again in 2025 smallmouth bass have been stocked in Lovering Lakes. Unlike the other species being stocked, smallmouth bass are not being raised at the Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery. Instead they are stocked from the breeding population located at Harley Pond.
