Narrow Hills Provincial Park

View all photos →

Established in 1934 as Nipawin Provincial Park, spanning 530 square kilometres and boasting over 25 accessible lakes, Narrow Hills Provincial Park is an adventurers paradise. It showcases a diverse landscape of northern boreal forest stretched across the Cub Hills plateau, and dotted with spectacular lakes. On top of the 32 lakes within the park, there are another 70 lakes within a 100km.

The park is open year round with both winter and summer activities, with something for every outdoor enthusiast to enjoy.

Access the park by way of Hansen Lake Road (Hwy 106) North of Smeaton or Hwy 120 North of Meath Park.

You can see photos/videos from trip to the park in May for a recent view of what it looks like after the fires.

Impacts of the SHOE Fire

The park was hit hard by the SHOE Fire with almost every lake in the park impacted. The park was closed for much of the 2025 season but is now open and ready for visitors once again! All the campgrounds in the park have re-opened except for the Gem Lakes.

Things look very different in Narrow Hills but it's still a gorgeous part of the province, with lots to do and is well worth a visit.

You can see videos and photos from a trip I took to many of the lakes in the park in May.

Gem Lakes

The Gem Lakes are a beautiful collection of small lakes in Narrow Hills Provincial Park that are a popular destination for hiking, paddling, camping and fishing.

The area was hit hard by the SHOE Fire in the summer of 2025, and the park is currently rebuilding the trails and campsites. It will remain closed for camping in 2026 but will re-open for day use this summer.

Narrow Hills Scenic Drive

The scenic drive in Narrow Hills Provincial park is one of the coolest drives anywhere in the province!

It is a 19km road from the Lower Fishing Lake Campground up to the Grace Lakes lookout. Most of the drive is along the top of an esker offering an amazing view of the landscape and lakes. The entire area was burnt in 2025 and will look a lot different if you've been here before. The road has been rebuilt and is in better shape then past years but is still pretty steep and windy in places, no campers/trailers allowed.

There is access to a number of hiking trails and lakes as well as some scenic lookouts along the road. There used to be a number of interpretive signs but those were lost in the fire. There is a picnic area with a outhouse and picnic table at the Grace Lakes lookout as well as room to park and turn your vehicle around.

The Karpan's have a great article about the drive with some pictures of what it looked like before the fires.

If you're in Narrow Hills Provincial Park this is a must see view and a spot I revisit frequently.

Resources

Fishing in Narrow Hills Provincial Park

With the amount of secluded creeks and lakes within Narrow Hills Provincial Park, anglers will be able to find a spot that serves just the kind of fishing they are looking for. The lakes are brimming with native fish such as walleye, yellow perch, whitefish, and northern pike. There are also a number of stocked lakes to cast your eye on with various stocked trout species such as brown, brook, rainbow, and tiger.

Camping in Narrow Hills Provincial Park

Narrow Hills Provincial Park is a very popular camping destination. There are many different options available, from the Lower Fishing Campground which features all the amenities like electricity, showers, playgrounds, boat launches, and even Yurts for rent to remote campsites at Lost Echo Lake with much more limited services.

Hiking in Narrow Hills Provincial Park

Up in the northwest corner of the park you will find the Gem Lakes Trail, which winds its way around a cluster of seven beautiful little lakes: Jade, Diamond, Opal, Sapphire, Pearl, Little Jade, and Little Pearl. Each of the deep sand-bottom lakes are stocked with native fish species and offer a number of wild camping sites along their perimeters.

You will find the trailhead and parking lot off Hwy 913, near the northwest corner of Jade Lake. The trail offers interpretive panels, washrooms, and hike-in tent camping sites.

Gem Lakes Trail Map

The Island Lake Hiking Trail is about 6km and winds its way through sandy terrain among towering black spruce and jack pine trees. This trail and the Beaver Lake and Heiberg Lake trails are accessible off the Narrow Hills Scenic Drive.

Lower Fishing Lake was pretty seriously impacted by the SHOE Fire last summer. Parts of the campground were burnt, but the park is hard at work rebuilding campsites and planting trees. It'll look different but it's still there and still an amazing spot to visit!

The road has been widened significantly into Lost Echo Lake. It's sandy and not as rocky as it used to be. The campground mostly survived the fire, with only a few of the campsites being burned. It's pretty burnt around the lake though.

Ispuchaw Lake was hit hard by the fires last summer. The campground was pretty much entirely wiped out. The park has been hard at work and new campsites have been built, an outhouse has been brought in, and the boat launch has been rebuilt and is much better then it was in years past. This lake is an old favourite of mine growing up, it is sad to see what it's looking like now!
