The lake is in the northern fishing zone. Burbot, Cisco, Lake Trout, Lake Whitefish, Longnose Sucker, Northern Pike, Round Whitefish, Walleye and White Sucker can be found in Mallen Lake.

Mallen Lake was named after William Brown Mallen on 1954-03-04 as part of the GeoMemorial Commemorative Naming Program ran by the Sask Government.
