The Gem Lakes are a beautiful collection of small lakes in Narrow Hills Provincial Park that were hit hard by the SHOE Fire in the summer of 2025.

The entire area around the lakes was wiped out, and the park is currently rebuilding the trails and campsites. It will remain closed for camping in 2026 but will re-open for day use this summer.

Reports

**Note: the park is still doing construction around the Gem Lakes so they are not currently ready for public access** I visited the Gem's on May 21st and recorded some drone videos/photos from the area. This area was hit hard by the SHOE Fire last summer, and it looks very different. The trails and campsites are being rebuilt. It's a very different landscape from what it was before.

Narrow Hills Provincial Park

Explore the park from a unique perspective, with the peaceful strokes of your own paddles. The many small lakes are a perfect fit for stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes. If you don't have your own equipment, boat rentals are available at Pine Ridge Resort.

The Gem Lakes are a collection of beautiful, clear lakes in Narrow Hills Provincial Park. The majority of the lakes are connected by portages and a hiking trail that loops around the lakes. There are several backcountry campsites at the various lakes.

The lakes and surrounding forest were hit by the SHOE Fire in the summer of 2025 and completely burnt. The campsites at the Gem Lakes will remain closed for the 2026 season, but the lakes themselves will re-open for day use in 2026.

This is a very popular tourist destination, and for good reason. It's a gorgeous place to explore and very popular with families. Hiking, fishing, camping, and soaking up the beautiful views, especially in the fall, are all reasons to visit the Gem Lakes.

Hiking at the Gem Lakes

A hiking trail starts at the parking lot and leads to Jade Lake and from there you can hike around the majority of the lakes.

Paddling at the Gem Lakes

It is possible to portage between most of the lakes, there are even carts available at some of the portages. You will need to carry your watercraft down from the parking lot to launch it on Jade Lake and paddle/portage from there.

Fishing at the Gem Lakes

The Gem Lakes are a popular fishing destination. Most of the lakes have been stocked with various types of trout, although given the pressure on the lakes, fishing can be difficult. There are no fish cleaning facilities at any of the lakes. The nearest spot with a fish cleaning station is Summit Lake.

Camping at the Gem Lakes

There are a number of backcountry campsites available. All of them require you to carry your supplies in.
