There are no parks or communities on the lake. Upper Makwa Lake is partially within Makwa Lake 129B (Reserve) and within Loon Lake No. 561 (Rural Municipality).

Makwa Lake Provincial Park is 3.3km WSW, Steele Narrows Provincial Park is 3km E, Bronson Forest Recreation Site is 24km ENE and Fowler Lake Recreation Site is 9.8km ENE of Upper Makwa Lake.

The lake was officially named on 1973-01-17. The name Upper Makwa Lake is of Cree origin.
