Steiestol Lake
Steiestol Lake (pronounced "stay-stall) is a tiny (35-acre) lake stocked with Rainbow Trout within Greenwater Lake Provincial Park. It is the highest lake in the area with an elevation of 2,025 feet. Steiestol Lake is accessible down a trail that starts at a parking lot on Highway 38.
The lake is just east of Greenwater Lake with a parking lot south of the highway. From the parking lot, there is a trail to the lake. Some folks do bring their boats down to the lake. Boats need to be registered with the park office and removed by Oct. 15th each year. (Please note: Boat Motors are Prohibited).
Steiestol Lake is stocked yearly with Rainbow Trout, and is a popular angling destination in both summer and winter. In the winter, there are groomed ski trails as well as snowmobile trails in the area. An aerator is present on the lake so be extra careful on the ice.
The lake was officially named in 1987 for Odd Jostein Steiestol who worked as a park ranger for Greenwater Provincial Park for 32 years. He also trapped in the area, and Steiestol Lake was part of his trapping lease.
This is a very cool and reasonably accessible lake and well worth the visit! When I was there in the fall of 2023, I saw two trumpeter swans on the lake!
This lake has been personally visited by myself, Matthew Siemens.

Directions to Steiestol Lake
Odd Jostein Steiestol
The lake was officially named in 1987 for Odd Jostein Steiestol who worked as a park ranger for Greenwater Provincial Park for 32 years. A biography of Odd and some photos provided by his family is included below.
Odd Jostein Steiestol was born on September 8, 1927 in Helleland, Norway. He settled in Canada with his parents Magnus and Anna and was the eldest of 9 children. Odd married Laurel Rosaasen in 1950, farming the family homestead and raising 2 sons and 6 daughters. Odd served as a Park Ranger at Greenwater Lake for 32 years.
Odd was a fur trapper, hunter and fisherman in this very area... his love as an avid sportsman led to much possibly exaggerated story-telling that would entertain all who could hear.
Odd also had a rock passion. He was always hunting for arrowheads and native artifacts - even being late for weddings due to stopping along the way to check out an interesting spot. Odd was well read on native history and heritage. WHile manning the Greenwater fire tower for many years he had extra time to read between checking for forest fires.
Odd guided hunters and taught them how to read animal signs and how to survive if lost in the bush. His best advise to inexperienced hunters was "Keep you eyes to the sun and you'll never be lost".
Steiestol Lake was port of Odd's trapping lease. It was only in this lake that Odd was surprised to catch beavers with a rare black fur that had a finer, softer hair. Odd thought this would be a good lake to stock with fish because of the abundance of fresh water shrimp - a natural food for the fish.
The Steiestol family is very honored to have this site named after Odd because of his history with it, thus keeping his treasured memories alive today.
