Big money and drama at the Montreal Lake Walleye Derby
The annual walleye derby on Montreal Lake drew another strong turnout this year and the weather looks like it was good!
Despite the high participation, catch results were notably low for walleye.
I've been told that only two walleye were caught during the event, along with 61 northern pike, which sounds like a pretty slow day considering how many anglers attended.
The event also saw controversy arise when one of the two walleye was disqualified. A statement has been released by Montreal Lake Cree Nation about the incident but it's not clear exactly what happened just yet. The incident reduced the final count to just one qualifying walleye. The rest of the walleye prizes were handed out based on draws.
The grand prize winning walleye was caught by Drayden Morin and came in at 2.5lbs, earning him $100,000. Allister Nawakayas brought in the largest northern pike for the 1st place in the sidebet winning $20,000.
