Saskatchewan Free Fishing Weekend returns for Family Day Weekend in 2026

Saskatchewan's Free Fishing Weekend is coming up from Feb. 14-16, 2026, and it's one of the best times of the year to get out on the ice.

For one weekend, you can fish without needing a licence, which makes it perfect for families, kids, or anyone who's been wanting to try fishing for the first time.

If you've been looking for an excuse to try ice fishing, this is it.

What does "Free Fishing Weekend" mean?

During the free fishing weekend:

  • No fishing licence is required
  • Open to residents and visitors
  • Does not apply in National Parks
  • If you want to transport fish out of the province a licence is still required.
  • All regular regulations still apply That means size limits, possession limits, and gear rules are still in effect, so make sure to check the regulations for the lake you're heading to.

Great time to try a new lake

This weekend is perfect for:

  • Taking the kids fishing
  • Teaching someone new
  • Exploring a lake you haven't visited yet
  • Checking out some of the ice fishing derbies taking place over the weekend.

If you're not sure where to go, you can use the SaskLakes Search tool to explore thousands of different lakes across the province.

Start exploring lakes

There are two of these free fishing weekends every year, so if you miss this one you'll have another chance in the summer!

If you make it out over the weekend I'd love to see what you get up too! Tag @SaskLakes or send in your photos/reports here on the site.

Have fun out there!
