Kenosee Superslides to Be Demolished in Moose Mountain Provincial Park

A longtime summer attraction in southeastern Saskatchewan is set to come down.

The Government of Saskatchewan has awarded a contract to a Saskatoon-based demolition company to remove the former Kenosee Superslides water park in Moose Mountain Provincial Park adjacent to Kenosee Lake. According to an order in council, the demolition contract will not exceed $227,052.

The project includes demolition of all remaining abandoned structures at the site, including the main pool building, mechanical building, water slides, supporting structures, pool, lazy river, and a stockpile of spare slide components. Once the structures are removed, open areas such as former pool basins and foundations will be backfilled using material from the adjacent hillside.

Closed Since 2020

First opened in 1986, the Kenosee Superslides operated for more than three decades before closing in August 2020. At that time, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) cancelled the facility’s operating licence.

In a statement, the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport said the facility no longer met current health and safety standards and was unable to obtain a licence from the SHA. Efforts to reopen for the 2021 season were unsuccessful after inspectors identified deficiencies, though specific details were not publicly disclosed.

Ownership previously stated that concerns centred around the aging infrastructure of the park and maintained that the facility had been closely monitored for safety.

Since closing, the province says the site has deteriorated and now presents a significant public safety risk.

A Popular Summer Destination

At its peak, the Superslides drew more than 35,000 visitors annually, according to figures shared by ownership in 2020. However, the park was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with revenue reportedly dropping by approximately 90 per cent between 2019 and 2020.

The water park had become a summer tradition for many Saskatchewan families and visitors to Moose Mountain Provincial Park, making its demolition a notable change for the area.

What Happens Next?

Demolition work is expected to begin soon and be completed by spring 2026.

Once the site has been cleared, the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport says it will assess future opportunities for the land to ensure it is used in a way that benefits park visitors.

For now, the removal of the Superslides marks the end of an era for one of Moose Mountain's most recognizable seasonal attractions.
