The lake is in the central fishing zone. Cisco, Lake Whitefish, Northern Pike and Walleye can be found in Mountney Lake.

Lac La Ronge Provincial Park is 43km NNW, Devil Lake Recreation Site is 25km WNW and Missinipe Recreation Site is 25km WNW of Mountney Lake.
Mountney Lake was named after Irwin Ronald Mountney on 1960-01-21 as part of the GeoMemorial Commemorative Naming Program ran by the Sask Government.
