Manitou Lake
Manitou Lake is a salt lake located in Saskatchewan, Canada, near the border with Alberta. The communities of Marsden (13km SE) and Neilburg (11km SSSW) are nearby. Access to the Regional Park is from a grid road south of Highway 40.
Big Manitou Regional Park is located on the north end of the lake. The park features a beach, boat launch, cabins, ball diamonds, and a campground, showers, and washrooms. Originally a part of Sufferen Lake Regional Park from 1975 to 2019, it became it's own standalone regional park in 2019.
The water level on the lake has been dropping rapidly since 1980, Manitou Island which used to be in the centre of the lake now connects to the southern shore. Due to the high salt content there are no fish found in the lake. The Manitou Sand Hills surround the southern half of the lake.
Manitou Lake is an important location for a number of bird species including piping plover, red-necked phalarope, sanderling, stilt sandpiper, ruddy turnstone, redhead, red knot, lesser scaup and the dunlin. There are six areas (totally over half of the lakes shoreline) that have been designated as critical Piping Plover habitat. This designation prevents development up to the high-water mark in order to protect the plovers habitat.
