Limestone Lake
Limestone Lake is a very large fishing lake located just east of Deschambault Lake. The lake is accessible from a gravel road off of the Hanson Lake Road (Highway 106).
Limestone Lake Recreation Site is adjacent to the north end of Limestone Lake and runs between the Hanson Lake Road and the lake itself. There is a boat launch with a gravel launch with a dock and no other amenities/services at the rec. site. Like many rec. sites near the highway there is often quite a bit of garbage around the site.
Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Walleye, Lake Whitefish, Burbot, White Sucker and Cisco can be found in Limestone Lake. Northern Lights Lodge is located just northwest of the lake and has boat rentals available.
Grassberry Creek flows into the south end of Limestone Lake and Grassberry River flows out of the north end of the lake.
Wild Rice on Limestone Lake
Wild Rice harvesting operations on Limestone Lake are currently conducted by the Angel Family from Denare Beach. It is one of the largest producing wild rice lakes in the province.
The Angels acquired the lease from the Stringers a number of years ago. Reed Stringer, resident of Smeaton at the time, first began be harvesting the lake in 1963 based on prior knowledge the lake had previously been seeded in the 1930' by local Conservation Officers as a means to provide improved habitat for fur production.
Reed's commercial harvesting operations were the first to be permitted and undertaken in Saskatchewan and the first to employ mechanical harvesting equipment as a means to replace the labour intensive hand harvesting methods then prescribed by provincial legislation, his harvesting innovations proved controversial at the time, but were finally recognized when the legislation was ultimately changed in 1980 legalizing the use of mechanical wild rice harvesters, a game changer for the entire industry making Saskatchewan the largest producer of wild rice in Canada as other growers steadily adopted Reed's pioneering technology.
Reed wrote a complete history of his early involvements within the wild rice industry, his account is contained in a local history book published in 1988.
