Geikie River Recreation Site is 15km S and Courtenay Lake Recreation Site is 20km N of Hills Lake.
Hills Lake was named after Glenn Lyon Hills on 1967-06-22 as part of the GeoMemorial Commemorative Naming Program ran by the Sask Government.
