The lake is in the northern fishing zone. Lake Trout, Lake Whitefish, Northern Pike and Walleye can be found in Brakewell Lake.

Geikie River Recreation Site is 27km SSE and Courtenay Lake Recreation Site is 19km NE of Brakewell Lake.
Brakewell Lake was named after Richard Brakewell on 1967-06-22 as part of the GeoMemorial Commemorative Naming Program ran by the Sask Government.
