Lake Lenore Lions Ice Derby Draws Big Turnout Despite Cold
Hundreds of anglers bundled up and hit the ice at Lake Lenore on Saturday, January 17, for the 16th Annual Lake Lenore Lions Fishing Derby.
Organizers say about 400 people registered for the event, with anglers travelling from across Saskatchewan to take part. Despite cold, windy conditions, head organizer Chris Bauer said attendance matched previous years and even more fish were caught than last year.
More than $20,000 in cash prizes were awarded, including over $15,000 for fishing results and nearly $5,000 through the 50-50 draw. The Lions Club also handed out 25 prize packages made up of donated and purchased items.
First place went to Kevin Wehage of Middle Lake with a 5.13-lb northern pike. Lane Carrier of Allan placed second, Ryan Yeager of Lake Lenore took third with a walleye (and the largest walleye prize), and Trevor Lohman of Humboldt finished fourth. The 50-50 draw was won by Dallas Korte.
Beyond the competition, the derby continues to support the community. Over the past year, the Lake Lenore Lions Club has donated more than $30,000 to local projects, fisheries improvements, youth programs, and Lions charities.
Organizers thanked anglers, volunteers, and sponsors, and say theyâre already looking ahead to next yearâs event.
