Thin Ice Expected on Theodore Reservoir This Winter
The Water Security Agency (WSA) is continuing major upgrades to the spillway at Theodore Dam on Theodore Reservoir this winter, including concrete repairs, drainage piping replacement, and new rip rap around the spillway entrance. The work follows earlier improvements to the dam's low-level outlet.
To support construction, the reservoir has been lowered 1.5 metres and a temporary cofferdam has been installed. WSA is also adding aeration systems to maintain oxygen levels for fish over the winter. These aerators will create thin ice and open-water areas on the lake.
WSA President Shawn Jaques said: "We know this is a popular location for snowmobiling, ice fishing and other winter activities, If people choose to go onto the lake this winter, we urge them to take caution and watch for markers."
WSA will have warning signs posted around the reservoir and Whitesand Regional Park. Additional upgrades continue into 2026, including safety improvements and modifications to the spillway structure.
