The lake is in the northern fishing zone. Lake Trout, Lake Whitefish, Northern Pike, Walleye and White Sucker can be found in Cairns Lake.

Cairns Lake was named after Hugh Cairns on 1936-07-15 as part of the GeoMemorial Commemorative Naming Program ran by the Sask Government.
