Using Leaders

If you’re targeting northern pike it’s critical to use a leader. Wire leaders prevent line slicing from sharp pike teeth but are brittle and highly visible to a shy fish. Fluorocarbon leaders provide invisibility and some stretch for shock absorption from the violent head shakes of a large fish on the line. While fluorocarbon shares some properties with monofilament line, it’s denser which means it sinks, making it an excellent leader material. Whichever type you choose, inspect leaders frequently for nicks and bends and replace if damaged.
