Sturgeon Lake

Sturgeon Lake is a popular fishing, boating, and camping lake located about 30 minutes north of Prince Albert.

The lake is located along the Sturgeon River and is quite long and winding. There is a dam at the eastern end of the lake that regulates that water level. The majority of the lake is within the Sturgeon Lake 101 Reserve, and the rest is in the RM of Shellbrook.

Sturgeon Lake Regional Park located at the lake has a campground, boat launch, beach, restaurant/store and two subdivisions of cabins.

The lake is split into two divided by a culvert. The larger section and most regional park services are on the eastern side. The western side is much quieter with no large boats, and is a great destination for a paddle. There is a picnic area and playground, and a launch suitable for paddlers. I've seen plenty of eagles, blue herons, and other birds on that side and you can paddle right up the Sturgeon River from the lake.

There are Walleye, Northern Pike and Perch in the lake, quite a few people come out to fish during the summer, and usually some ice fishing shacks setup in the winter.

This lake has been personally visited by myself, Matthew Siemens.

Very high water levels right now. Lots of docks 6 inches under water. More water waiting to come through the culvert so it might continue to go up for a few days.

Put the canoes in at the gravel pit and canoed down the Sturgeon River to the lake and through the culvert. There are quite a few trees and obstructions across the river right now, but it's a really pretty paddle.

Regional park boat launch hasn’t been plowed. I’d suggest a snowmobile or a truck to get down to the water.

Directions to Sturgeon Lake

The roads to the Regional Park are actually quite good. The park is accessible from Highway 788 which can be accessed either from Highway 693 north of Holbein or 355 near spruce home. Highway 693 is paved for it's entirety but can have broken pavement and ridges depending on the time of year. Highway 355 has been recently paved up to the Sturgeon Lake Reserve turn off but after that is 14km of often fairly rough gravel to the regional park.

Sturgeon Lake Regional Park

Sturgeon Lake Regional park is split into two with most services located to the east of the culvert and a smaller cabin subdivision and day use area to the West of the culvert. The main section of the park on the west lake features a campground with seasonal and overnight spots, a boat launch, a sandy beach, a small store/restaurant, playgrounds, washrooms, fish filleting, and many privately owned cabins. On the east lake there is a very nice day-use picnic area as well as a playground. There is no boat launch on this side but it is possible to carry a small boat or canoe/kayak down to the water here. This side of the lake is quiet and the lack of big boats makes it a really nice paddling spot!
