Do I need to add heat to my chicken coop? | No-Heat Chicken Coop in Northern Canada
This video goes over the reasons why I will NOT be putting additional heat in my chicken coop for the winter. Even though I live in northern Canada and experience very cold winters I have chosen not to add any supplemental heat to the coop. Before you jump to conclusions like I don't care about the health of my birds I want to stress that this is a decision I have spent a lot of time researching and debating. Our laying hens become a part of our family and I would never subject them to conditions they couldn't thrive in. But realistically with an unreliable power source, it would be far more lethal to supplement them with heat and loose power than it would to allow them to naturally adjust to the colder temperature. I will also be re-evaluating all winter long and will change their conditions if it is affecting their health or well-being.
