It's Steam Fog Season in the Qu'appelle Valley at Round Lake, Saskatchewan. Steam fog occurs when cold air passes over warm water - usually water is at least 9 - 12 Celsius warmer than the air right above it. When the air is much colder than the water."steam" forms over the water because the warmer water evaporates into the air, and the cold air above cannot hold all the moisture. causing it to condense into visible water vapor. also known as sea smoke or steam fog. This is a form of fog, not actual steam, as steam is invisible water vapor, and this process is the opposite of how fog normally forms from warm air moving over cold water. Even though we videoed close to this area at the beginning of the month, I wanted to catch the Steam Fog over the water. The frost and the fog were pretty to see. We started our road trip at 8:30 am and arrived at Round Lake by 9 am, and we were home by 5 pm. We didn't have a place in mind, but I wanted to start off in the Qu'appelle Valley and see what we could find. The sun was warm, but the air was cool; however, we started off at -3c this morning and reached +3C today.
