Nipekamew Sand Cliffs
An hour southeast of La Ronge are the Nipekamew Sand Cliffs. These unique geological formations pre-date the last ice age and are the remnants of an ancient river. The river flowed from the Precambrian Shield and emptied into the inland shallow sea that covered most of our province roughly 120 million years ago when plant eating dinosaurs roamed Saskatchewan. After millions of years of erosion, the sands of the prehistoric river are now exposed in the form of the vertical cliffs along the banks of the Nipekamew River.
