Invasive Mussels Detected in Lake of the Prairies

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has issued containment orders for Lake of the Prairies after invasive mussel larvae (veligers) were detected during routine monitoring.

The detection was made near the Highway 5 bridge on the Manitoba side of the lake and was confirmed through additional monitoring by both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The two provinces, along with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, are now coordinating a joint response to better understand the extent of the infestation and reduce the risk of the invasive species spreading to other waters.

Gardiner Dam Spillway re-opened on Lake Diefenbaker

The Water Security Agency (WSA) will begin operating the spillway at Gardiner Dam this week following significant rainfall across Alberta that has dramatically increased inflows into Lake Diefenbaker.

Beginning July 2, outflows from Gardiner Dam will increase from approximately 270 cubic metres per second (m3/s) to 470 m3/s. On July 3, releases are expected to increase again to approximately 770 m3/s as spillway operations begin.

Current plans call for spillway operations to continue until approximately July 25, after which outflows will gradually be reduced back to 270 m3/s. WSA notes that additional increases could become necessary if more rainfall occurs or inflows into Lake Diefenbaker continue to rise.

Flooding in many areas

There is currently flooding and high water at a number of lakes in the province including Fishing Lake, Madge Lake, Canora Lake, McBride Lake, and I'm sure I'm missing a few!

In some areas boat launches and docks have been closed including at Leslie Beach Regional Park on Fishing Lake.

How are things looking where you are?

Stay safe out there and keep an eye on the water levels!
